DRAWINGS

These drawings are the result of several residencies and travels through central and northern Italy, mainly Tuscany: many of the hill towns of the Garfagnana including Barga, Coreglia, Castelnova and the cities of Lucca and Florence.

Some were done on location, the rest from sketches and photographs taken by the artist. All are executed directly with a magic Montegrappa Italian fountain pen in Visconti sepia ink with an occasional dash of water applied by brush or fingers. The paper is 120 pound, 100% cotton Annigoni, made in Italy by Cartiera Magnani, who has been in business since the 15th century; with a little knowledge of art history and imagination this presents an awesome and intimidating legacy for the artist to attempt to maintain.

Arguably the most beautiful place on earth, Tuscany is incredibly rich in visual inspiration; the biggest challenge being avoidance of the quaint and picturesque. In addition to imagery, the content of these drawings is about mark-making, the richness of textures, patterns and the usual suspects: light, space, shape and form.
